Sales of skateboards have soared this summer in London as city dwellers look for alternative transport options

Londoners are buying wheels of all kinds to get around the city during the busy Olympics, with sales of skateboards, in-line skates and electric bikes up 100% and more over last year, a retailer reports.

Amazon.co.uk said sales in London of skateboards were 167% up from the same time in 2011, while rollerblades were 140% higher and scooters were up 36%.

While mountain bike sales in London have risen 42% over 2011, electric bike sales have spiked by 100%.

"It appears that Londoners are looking for creative and active ways to get around the capital during this busy few weeks", said Julian Monaghan, the website's sports and outdoors manager, adding: "It's a great time to try alternative ways of travelling to work or out in the city and perhaps many who give it a go at this point will continue to enjoy it long after the summer of sport."
